Punta Bergantín: A Boost for Puerto Plata

A New Boost for the Hotel Sector

Puerto Plata, a province in the northern part of the Dominican Republic, has seen its hotel sector decline over the past two decades. However, President Luis Abinader has announced promising news that could turn this situation around. In addition to the increase in cruise tourism in the area, construction has begun on the Punta Bergantín tourism project, which is set to give Puerto Plata a new boost.

Punta Bergantín is a tourism and real estate development project that will be carried out on an area of 8 million square meters. Its main goal is to achieve comprehensive development of the destination, which includes the construction of approximately 4,500 hotel rooms, 2,000 residential and mixed-use tourism units, plus another 2,500. Plans also include a golf club, public-access beach clubs and a theme-park village unique to the area.

This plan has been described as an opportunity to boost local tourism and, in particular, to foster Puerto Plata's economic development by creating thousands of jobs. It's worth noting that this is an entirely private project, which will feature an academic campus aimed at promoting education and innovation in the country. It will also include a film studio, an 18-hole golf course and adequate road infrastructure.

According to Samuel Pereyra, general manager of Banreservas, Punta Bergantín will have a total of four thousand rooms, making it a large-scale project with great potential for the region's tourism industry.

Punta Bergantín is located on the beach of the same name, a beautiful beach with calm, clean waters between Playa Dorada and Sosúa. Before this project, few people outside Puerto Plata knew that Playa Bergantín existed. It can currently be reached from Montellano or via kilometer 7 of the Carretera Luperón, near Playa Dorada. However, due to road conditions, high-clearance or 4×4 vehicles are recommended to get to this beach.

One of the most exciting aspects of Punta Bergantín is the inclusion of film studios that will be managed by renowned actor and producer Vin Diesel. In addition, an innovation center will be established to bring together tech companies and national and international universities, making the destination a benchmark not only for tourism but also for innovation and entrepreneurship. The initiative aims to create a “Silicon Beach” in the region.

In short, the Punta Bergantín tourism project represents a great opportunity to revive Puerto Plata's hotel sector. With its comprehensive development, job creation and state-of-the-art facilities, the project promises to bring a new economic and tourism boost to the province. Grupo Puntacana, a pioneering company in tourism and financial development, is leading this initiative, which seeks to transform this remote, idyllic corner of Puerto Plata into an internationally renowned destination.
